Argentina land policy overhaul sparks protests over Junín housing auction and foreign land sales

President Javier Milei’s government decided to auction the Procrear housing site in Junín, a 21‑hectare parcel where 149 homes were under construction for more than 2,000 families. Local officials, including councilwoman Clara Bozzano and provincial adviser Lautaro Mazzutti, said the move destroys the hope of home ownership for those families and reflects a partnership between the national and municipal authorities.

At the same time, Minister Federico Sturzenegger is finalising an omnibus law that would overhaul property rights, deregulate real‑estate brokerage, books, pharmacies and other sectors. The draft would eliminate the 15 % cap on foreign ownership of Argentine land, allow any foreign resident to buy land without limits, and ban foreign states from acquiring any rural land. Senator Patricia Bullrich supports the removal of restrictions, stating that “any foreigner who lives in Argentina can buy land without limitation.” Critics warn the changes could increase fraud, affect buyers and tenants, and undermine existing protections for the housing market.

Together, the Procrear auction and the proposed land‑law reforms have ignited political controversy across the Milei administration, drawing criticism from local politicians, professional associations and opposition lawmakers.
