Argentina's Milei government aims to cut 5,000 public jobs by August

The administration of President Javier Milei plans to reduce another 4,000‑5,000 public sector positions through voluntary retirement offers before August. The scheme targets employees of the National Social Security Administration (ANSES), National Road Agency (Vialidad Nacional), the National Institute of Agricultural Technology (INTA), the PAMI health insurer, Radio y Televisión Argentina (RTA) and Casa de Moneda. About 1,200 ANSES staff have already accepted the offer, representing a 10% cut, while roughly 1,000 road agency workers and 400 INTA employees have done the same.

Since Milei took office, the state workforce fell from 343,357 in November 2023 to 276,104 in March—a 19.5% reduction and the loss of more than 60,000 jobs overall. Voluntary retirements pay roughly 90% of an employee’s salary per year, but the government expects payroll savings to offset the cost within a year. Officials say the process has proceeded without judicial disputes.
