Argentina's Mint Owes Brazil's Mint 63.6 million Reais
The Argentine state mint, Casa de Moneda, has failed to pay the Brazilian Casa da Moeda the R$ 63.6 million debt recognized in an agreement signed in December 2023. The schedule called for the first two installments in June and July 2024, but neither was transferred, creating a cash‑flow shortfall for the Brazilian mint and prompting a review of its financial planning.
The default raises concerns about the credibility of the Argentine mint in future international cooperation and may lead Brazil to issue a formal notice, renegotiate the payment calendar, or invoke dispute‑resolution mechanisms outlined in the contract. No official remedial action has been announced yet, and the issue is being monitored by the economic and diplomatic authorities of both countries.
