Argentina faces widespread strong wind alerts and sharp cold drop
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) issued yellow alerts for strong Zonda winds across several provinces. In Catamarca the alert warned of gusts that could exceed 100 km/h, while La Rioja received a preventive alert for wind affecting all its departments. Salta reported Zonda gusts in Las Lajitas (Anta) that disrupted traffic and visibility. Jujuy’s capital saw wind speeds up to 80 km/h, and Entre Ríos was placed under a renewed alert with gusts up to 90 km/h.
Neuquén recorded gusts of up to 83 km/h in Zapala, and Buenos Aires experienced a cold snap with minimum temperatures forecast at 3 °C. The severe wind events caused material damage in Tucumán, Córdoba and Entre Ríos, including fallen trees, roof blow‑offs and two minor fires. Córdoba also faced a very high fire‑risk rating for the weekend due to dry conditions.
Overall, the coordinated wind alerts and the accompanying cold front affected large parts of Argentina, prompting precautionary measures, travel warnings and heightened fire‑prevention alerts.
