Argentina's new ID design sparks debate over football symbols
A Chilean woman has gained social media attention after expressing confusion over the design of her newborn son’s Argentine national identity document (DNI). The new document features three stars, representing Argentina’s three FIFA World Cup titles (1978, 1986, and 2022).
In a video shared by her partner, the woman questioned the inclusion of football symbols on an official identification document, asking, “What do the three stars have to do with the national identity document?” Her partner, an Argentine national, defended the design as a reflection of the country’s deep passion for football.
The updated DNI design, which began circulating in 2024, incorporates various national symbols including the Sol de Mayo, the Andes mountains, and the Perito Moreno glacier, alongside technological updates such as chips and QR codes for electronic validation.
