Argentina's news consumption shifts as trust hits historic lows and digital platforms dominate
A Reuters Institute study of Argentine media finds confidence in news at a record low of 26%, while only 43% of respondents say they are very interested in news. Traditional outlets such as television, radio and print continue to lose audience and advertising revenue, while emerging formats like live video and AI‑driven platforms grow, especially among younger users.
Infobae remains the most visited news site, with 38% of people accessing it at least weekly, followed by TN (36% on cable, 35% online). Native digital ventures Luzu TV and El Destape Web have reached 13% and 10% respectively, matching the reach of public television. Meta’s family of platforms (Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp) collectively account for 43% of news discovery, with Instagram gaining ground. YouTube is used by 32% of respondents, TikTok by 19%, and X by 10%.
The report also highlights a worsening press environment: 40% of the country’s territory is an “information desert,” journalist salaries are low, and attacks on reporters rose 55% in the last year. The Argentine press freedom ranking fell 11 places. In August 2025, Paramount Global sold the country's top‑rated TV channel Telefe to an Argentine group, reducing foreign ownership in the sector.
