Argentina risk country index falls to 430 points amid Milei's central bank reform

Argentina’s country‑risk index closed July 31 at 430 points, down 11 points from the previous day, after President Javier Milei announced a reform of the Central Bank charter that would prohibit monetary financing of the Treasury and increase the bank’s independence. The announcement spurred a rally in Argentine sovereign bonds, while the S&P Merval fell 0.2 % in peso terms and 1.3 % when measured in dollars. Wall Street‑listed Argentine stocks slipped, led by Banco Supervielle (‑5.8 %), BBVA Argentina (‑3.5 %) and Cresud (‑3 %). The wholesale dollar ended the month at $1.485 per US $, a 0.2 % monthly rise and the smallest increase in the last quarter. The official dollar remained below the $1,500 ceiling, trading around $1.460 for buying and $1.510 for selling – about 24.2 % under the band’s upper limit. Futures markets projected the wholesale dollar near $1.515 by the end of August and around $1.6305 by December. Analysts said the reform aims to improve debt sustainability and reduce financing costs for the government.
