Argentina Senate delays land‑ownership reform bill until August

The Argentine Senate has postponed debate on the "inviolability of private property" bill, a centerpiece of President Javier Milei’s agenda, to a fourth‑round of voting on 6 August. The legislation would remove the current 15 % cap on foreign ownership of rural land, alter expropriation rules, modify fire‑management provisions and streamline evictions. The move followed a failed attempt to secure the required quorum and votes, with the government obtaining only 37 senators present and falling short of the majority needed for medium sanction. Opposition parties, the Unión por la Patria bloc, the Federación Agraria Argentina and other critics warned that the reform could jeopardize national sovereignty, environmental protection and strategic resources. President Milei, defending the proposal, described opponents as “enemies of progress” and reiterated his commitment to defend private‑property rights. The Senate also approved a slate of diplomatic appointments and judicial promotions in the same session.
