Argentina's political parties confront internal leadership battles ahead of 2027 elections

The Buenos Aires provincial branch of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) completed a leadership renewal after Emiliano Balbín was elected head of the provincial committee. The party will convene a new Convention on 8 August at the Club Atenas in La Plata, where Pablo Nicoletti is expected to be chosen as convention president and the body will set its alliance strategy for upcoming contests.

In a parallel development, the faction of Peronism aligned with Governor Axel Kicillof, represented by Minister of Government Carlos Bianco, called for a single presidential candidate for the 2027 elections. Bianco rejected proposals from La Libertad Avanza to run separate lists and argued that division would assure defeat, insisting that the primary (PASO) remains the best mechanism to select a unified contender against the right‑wing candidate expected to be Javier Milei.
