Argentina's President Milei faces criminal probe over $LIBRA cryptocurrency scandal

A federal court in Comodoro Py will hear a case on 10 August to decide whether to reinstate five complaints that were previously removed from the $LIBRA investigation. The complaints were dismissed after a request by lobbyist Mauricio Novelli, who was involved in creating the digital token linked to President Javier Milei. Plaintiffs, including investors and legal representatives, argue their participation should be restored, while the court previously noted that investors should have been aware of the high‑risk, speculative nature of the asset.

Separately, prosecutors have sought the indictment of President Milei and his sister Karina Milei, along with several advisers and businessmen, for alleged personal involvement in the negotiation and promotion of $LIBRA. The accusations claim the Milei family received cryptocurrency assets in exchange for facilitating agreements between public officials and private operators, citing meetings with U.S. entrepreneur Hayden Davis and the use of official channels to publicise the token. The central charge is incompatibility with public duties, punishable by one to six years in prison, and highlights three phases of the alleged scheme: planning, execution, and post‑collapse fund transfers.
