Javier Milei overhauls cabinet, abolishes Interior Ministry and advances electoral and monetary reforms

President Javier Milei swore Diego Santilli in as the new chief of staff, replacing Manuel Adorni amid a judicial investigation. A decree eliminated the Ministry of the Interior, transferring its duties to the Cabinet and creating two vice‑chief posts – Ignacio Devitt for the Cabinet and Gustavo Coria for Interior.

The Milei administration is also pushing a political reform that would suspend the primary elections (PASO) by offering provincial governors a “collector‑list” system to attach their candidates to the presidential ticket. Negotiations with governors and legislators are ongoing, with the goal of presenting the proposal to Congress by August.

In parallel, Milei defended a planned overhaul of the Central Bank’s charter. The reform seeks to bar the BCRA from financing the Treasury, reverse the 2012 charter that allowed multiple monetary goals, and align the bank’s independence with a single inflation‑target mandate, drawing on the U.S. Federal Reserve model.
