Argentina's private sector urges tax reform amid Milei's economic overhaul
Leading private‑sector groups and prominent economists in Argentina are intensifying calls for a comprehensive tax reform. They argue that the current “cost Argentine” – high and complex tax burdens at national, provincial and municipal levels – threatens the country's competitiveness and its ability to secure free‑trade agreements, notably with India. The push comes as President Javier Milei’s government has already enacted sweeping changes, including the Bases Law, decree 70/23, labor reforms, and cuts to export retentions. Economist Ricardo Arriazu warned that without eliminating the tax burden, Argentina risks missing strategic trade opportunities and may face a surge in unemployment as the economy restructures. Critics note that the proposed reforms could make the tax system more regressive, potentially widening social disparities while aiming to boost investment and export growth.
