Argentina's Radical Party urges government to implement accusatory criminal system in Buenos Aires

Six deputies of the Unión Cívica Radical (UCR) submitted a resolution in the Chamber of Deputies demanding that the national executive take the steps needed to apply the Federal Criminal Procedure Code on an accusatory basis in the federal appellate courts of the autonomous city of Buenos Aires by 1 October. The lawmakers argue that postponing the reform "vulnerates the right of access to justice and weakens constitutional guarantees" and note that the code, approved in 2014, would replace the mixed inquisitorial system with oral, public, and adversarial proceedings. They cite expected benefits such as reducing average sentencing times from around three years to about ten months and increasing transparency and efficiency. The UCR highlighted that, ten years after the law on progressive implementation, the new code is in force in only 44 % of the intended jurisdictions.
