Argentina issues widespread snow, rain and Zonda wind alerts
The Servicio Meteorológico Nacional (SMN) issued a series of red, orange and yellow alerts across six Argentine provinces as an intense cold front brings extreme temperatures, heavy snowfall, rain and strong Zonda winds. A red alert for extreme cold covers western Santa Cruz, while orange alerts warn of snow accumulations of up to 60 cm in Neuquén and rain totals of 30‑60 mm. Yellow alerts cover snow in Chubut (20‑40 cm) and in the Comodoro Rivadavia area (10‑30 cm on low ground, 20‑40 cm in the mountains), as well as Zonda wind in San Juan with gusts that may exceed 70 km/h.
Provincial and municipal authorities have advised the public to avoid outdoor activities during the most intense periods, secure loose objects, use chains on vehicles travelling to ski areas such as Cerro Catedral in Bariloche, and follow official updates. The civil defence services in San Juan and Mendoza also issued guidance on reduced visibility, fire risk and safe driving. The combined alerts affect travel, tourism and daily life throughout the covered regions.
