Argentina reforms SIDE intelligence agency with new professional statute

The Argentine government has approved a new statute for the State Intelligence Secretariat (SIDE) via Decree 1021/2026, aiming to professionalize the national intelligence system. The reform, which will take effect on January 1, 2027, establishes the Intelligence Corps of the Nation and introduces a formal career path based on merit, technical training, and performance evaluations rather than seniority alone.

Key changes include an open and transparent entry process through annual calls for the National Intelligence School's Basic Entry Course. New personnel will undergo a conditional period of up to one year before permanent confirmation. The statute also establishes three distinct personnel cadres based on educational background. For current agents, a transition regime will be implemented to recognize existing service years, training, and professional backgrounds.

Financially, the government has significantly increased SIDE's resources. The 2027 budget proposal projects $181,472 million for the agency, a substantial increase compared to previous allocations. Intelligence Secretary Cristian Auguadra stated the reform is intended to create a modern, professional body that serves the national interest and transcends political cycles.
