Argentina's sugar and oilseed sectors pause strikes as labor talks continue
In Tucumán, the Federación Obrera Tucumana de la Industria Azucarera (FOTIA) and the Centro Azucarero Regional de Tucumán (CART) reached a provisional agreement with most sugar mills, suspending all strike actions until 22:00 on June 29. The virtual session, held before the national Labor Ministry, was led by union leaders Rubén Medina, Marcelo Ogas and Luciano Concha and company representatives Augusto Garaventa, Luis Reyes, Juan José Maccio and José Antonio Zabala. While a few isolated mills still need to sign, the truce eases the intense wage dispute covering the May 2026‑April 2027 collective bargaining period.
Meanwhile, negotiators in the oilseed industry met at the Labor Ministry but failed to close a deal. The Sindicato de Obreros y Empleados Aceiteros (SOEA) of San Lorenzo and the Federación de Trabajadores del Complejo Industrial Oleaginoso clashed with the employers over wage adjustments. Workers demand a baseline salary of 2.802.754 pesos, whereas companies propose monthly inflation‑indexed increases. The talks will resume on Monday, with the outcome seen as crucial to avoiding further industrial action in the Rosario‑Santa Fe corridor.
