Argentina's sunflower growers target yield gaps at Puro Girasol congress

The second edition of the Puro Girasol congress was held in Trenque Lauquen, organized by Advanta Semillas and attended by producers, advisors, researchers and market leaders such as Bunge Argentina. Speakers highlighted that Argentina’s sunflower harvest runs a 35 % gap between potential and actual yields nationally, about 30 % in the western Buenos Aires region. Experts Diego Rotilli, Martín Díaz Zorita and Matías Saks stressed that precise agronomic decisions—especially timing of phosphorus and nitrogen applications and sowing density—are key to closing this gap.

Separately, Jacto Argentina’s commercial specialist Fernando Herrero described a renewed interest in sunflower across provinces from Chaco to Río Negro, noting that many farmers are returning to the crop after years dominated by soy. He also presented the Uniport sprayer, which provides uniform droplet size and reduces input use, supporting higher-quality applications for the expanding sunflower area.
