Argentina's Torture Prevention Committee holds session in Rio Grande

An ordinary session of the Committee of Evaluation of the Follow‑up and Implementation of the Convention against Torture was convened at the Legislative delegation in Rio Grande, Tierra del Fuego. Legislators Raúl Von Der Thusen (SF) and Pablo Villegas (MPF) attended, along with Supreme Court representative Dr. Manuela Palacios Murphy. Human‑rights academic Micaela González of the UNTDF highlighted the conditions of people deprived of liberty in the prisons of Ushuaia and Rio Grande, discussing issues such as searches, visitation rights, regulations and daily challenges of confinement.

Representatives of the Rio Grande Human‑Rights Multisectoral, the Fundación Derechos en Red, the provincial executive and the UNTDF also participated. After the discussion, the committee members toured the Non‑Parental Care Residence, the Rio Grande Detention Unit and the Women’s Detention Facility to observe the situation firsthand.
