Argentina's university leaders stress education's role in national development

Demian Ferreyra, vice‑dean of the UTN Faculty in Tierra del Fuego, marked the centenary of the 1918 University Reform by emphasizing the strategic importance of public universities for Argentina's social transformation, scientific progress and industrial growth. He linked the federal structure of the Universidad Tecnológica Nacional to nation‑building, recalling historic figures such as Manuel Belgrano and José de San Martín, and concluded that “the university that builds the nation” must expand access and produce knowledge for the people.

Eugenio Martín De Palma, rector of the Universidad Católica de Santa Fe and head of the Council of Rectors of Private Universities (CRUP), addressed a panel celebrating 70 years of private higher education in Argentina. He highlighted the legal framework established by Decrees 6403 (1955) and 14557 (1958), noted that private universities graduate a higher share of students (40.8 % versus 18.7 % in the public sector), and stressed autonomy, quality and social inclusion. He identified digital transformation and the strategic use of artificial intelligence as top priorities, asserting that “innovation must be our hallmark and the generation of new knowledge our DNA”.
