Argentina's Villa Mercedes merchants report sharp drop in consumer spending

The Chamber of Commerce of Villa Mercedes said sales have fallen sharply as families' disposable income tightens. Secretary Darío Sánchez noted that shoppers now buy milk every day and a half or every two days instead of daily, indicating reduced purchasing power.

Merchants are coping with increasing stock that risks expiring, resorting to heavy discounts in the final days before spoilage. According to a bank manager, about 80 % of the seasonal bonus and most of the extra holiday pay were deposited to settle debts, limiting their effect on consumption. Credit‑card and fintech loan indebtedness is also rising.

Ahead of the national football team's match, many stores plan to stay open later, hoping to capture any additional sales despite the broader downturn.
