Javier Milei alleges US Democrats, Brazil and Mexico funded anti‑Argentina campaign after World Cup loss
After Spain defeated Argentina in the 2026 FIFA World Cup final, Argentine President Javier Milei sparked a diplomatic dispute by alleging a coordinated “anti‑Argentina” campaign that sought to undermine his country’s image during the tournament.
Milei said the campaign was financed by the United States Democratic Party and that the governments of Brazil and Mexico were also involved, claiming Brazil provided the largest amount of money. He posted on X a Panorama article that criticised Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, alleged a bribery investigation of former premier José Luis Rodríguez Zapatero, and asserted that Spain spends “270 000 million” in subsidies.
The Brazilian government denied Milei’s accusations, and no evidence has been presented to substantiate the alleged campaign. Milei’s statements have heightened tensions with Brazil and Spain, while the claims remain unverified.
