Argentina's youth cost crisis keeps 44% living with parents

A study by the Centre for Social Research (CIS) at the Universidad Argentina de la Empresa (UADE) found that 44% of young Argentines still live with their mother or father. The report defines an "emancipation basket" – the minimum monthly expenses required to live independently – at 1,321,651 Argentine pesos. This basket breaks down into rent (623,726 pesos), services such as utilities and internet (370,512 pesos), and personal consumption (327,413 pesos). The average monthly salary for a young worker is about 900,000 pesos, meaning the cost of independence is roughly 47% higher than typical earnings.

The median age at which Argentines leave the parental home is 28.1 years; women move out earlier at an average of 27.1 years, while men do so at 29.2 years. Women’s average income is 616,300 pesos, about 32% less than men’s, but they tend to leave home sooner, often sharing a household to split costs. About 15% of respondents have returned to live with their parents after a period of independence, mainly due to rising housing costs, while another 15% cite a desire to maintain their current lifestyle as a reason to remain at home.
