Argentine businessmen Jinkis to appear in U.S. court over FIFAGate scandal
Argentine businessmen Hugo Jinkis and Mariano Jinkis are scheduled to appear before a U.S. court in New York this Thursday regarding their involvement in the ‘FIFAGate’ corruption scandal.
The owners of the marketing firm Full Play were originally accused in 2015 of participating in a bribery scheme to secure commercial and broadcasting rights for various sporting events through payments to officials at Conmebol and Concacaf. Prosecutors allege the pair used the United States financial system to transfer tens of millions of dollars in connection with these contracts.
The U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of New York has filed documents with Judge Pamela Chen seeking a resolution to the charges. The prosecution anticipates that the Jinkis will waive their right to a grand jury indictment and will likely plead not guilty to charges of commercial bribery. The businessmen have reportedly signed deferred prosecution agreements and are expected to request release on bail.
