Fishing companies face criminal charges for alleged smuggling in Malvinas
Lawyers from the organization Reset Republicano have filed a criminal complaint in Argentina's Federal Criminal Economic Court No. 7 against several international fishing corporations. The complaint targets directors and representatives of companies primarily based in Galicia, Spain, including Lanzal, Grupo Pereira, Pescapuerta, Copemar, Ferralmes, Hermanos Touza, and Moradiña.
The legal action alleges that these firms are operating in the Argentine Continental Shelf and Exclusive Economic Zone using illicit authorizations granted by the British administration of the Malvinas Islands. The complainants argue that these operations constitute aggravated smuggling, violate national sovereignty, and infringe upon customs regulations.
According to the filing, the companies exploit more than 250,000 tons of marine species annually, such as Illex and Patagonian squid. The maneuver involves evading Argentine controls by landing catches in Puerto Argentino or transshipping them on the high seas to foreign ports without registering with the General Directorate of Customs, thereby avoiding export duties and mandatory settlement in the official exchange market.
