Argentine Electoral Chamber warns of 2027 election logistics

The National Electoral Chamber in Argentina has raised concerns regarding the possibility of holding concurrent national and provincial elections in 2027. Specifically, the judiciary is evaluating the logistical challenges of using two different voting systems on the same day in the City of Buenos Aires and the Province of Buenos Aires.

In 2027, the country will implement the Single Paper Ballot (Boleta Única de Papel) for national presidential elections. The concern lies in requiring voters to use this new system for national offices and then transition to the traditional party ballot system for local positions. This dual-system approach could lead to increased security demands, logistical complications, and significant delays for voters.

If the Electoral Chamber moves forward with a prohibition on combining these systems, provincial leaders, such as Governor Axel Kicillof, may be forced to decouple provincial elections from the national calendar. Such a decision would alter existing electoral strategies that aim to leverage national momentum for local candidates.
