Argentine Football Association approves new league format for 2027

The Argentine Football Association (AFA) has approved a structural overhaul for the country's First Division championship, set to take effect in 2027. The new format will replace the current division of 30 clubs into two groups with a single league table.

Under the new system, teams will play 30 rounds, facing every other club once with an additional match reserved for regional derbies. The season will continue to feature the Apertura and Clausura tournaments. Following the first 15 rounds of the Apertura, the top 16 teams will enter a playoff phase to determine the champion. The Clausura will begin from the 16th round with a reset in points, also concluding with a playoff for the top 16 teams.

Three champions will be crowned each season: the winners of the Apertura and Clausura, and the team that finishes at the top of the overall annual classification.

River Plate was the only club to vote against the proposal, advocating instead for a gradual reduction of the top flight to 20 teams. While the relegation system remains unconfirmed, current discussions involve relegation based on the annual table and a three-season points average.
