AFA evaluates new league format for 2027
The Argentine Football Association (AFA) is considering a significant restructuring of the Primera División for the 2027 season. A proposal presented by club officials, including Gimnasia La Plata president Carlos Anacleto, aims to eliminate the current division into two zones in favor of a unified “all-against-all” format involving 30 teams.
The proposed system would consist of 30 matchdays, including a special round dedicated to traditional derbies. The season would be divided into two stages: after 15 matches, the top 16 teams would enter playoffs to determine the Apertura champion. Following a winter break, the league would resume to complete the remaining fixtures, culminating in a second playoff for the Clausura champion.
While the tournament would feature two short-term champions, a single annual league champion would still be crowned based on the cumulative points table. The proposal seeks to ensure all teams face the same level of competition and to resolve statistical discrepancies caused by the current zone-based system. Decisions regarding relegation rules and international qualification spots remain under discussion.
