Argentine footballer Matías Pourrain detained by ICE in Florida

Argentine footballer Matías Pourrain remains in custody by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) following his arrest at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport on August 6. Pourrain, a player for Miami United FC, was traveling to Los Angeles for a match when he was detained.

A legal dispute has emerged regarding his immigration status. His defense and family assert that he possesses a valid work permit and has a pending immigration application. Conversely, the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) states that Pourrain entered the country on a six-month visa in November 2019 and remained in the U.S. after the visa expired in May 2020.

Pourrain’s mother has raised concerns regarding his treatment, describing overcrowded and difficult conditions during his initial days of detention. His attorney, Regina Borges, is seeking bail during an upcoming Wednesday hearing, stating she believes he qualifies for release while his immigration process continues. Miami United FC has expressed its support for the player and is collaborating with his legal team.
