Argentine footballers increasingly transfer to United Arab Emirates
Young Argentine football talents are increasingly moving from the Liga Profesional to the United Arab Emirates. This trend is driven by the tax-free income structure in the UAE, which makes contracts significantly more lucrative than those offered in Argentina.
Clubs in the UAE are no longer just seeking established stars at the end of their careers; they are actively targeting young players with resale value. For example, Al Ain paid approximately $4 million for 20-year-old Mateo Sanabria. Argentine institutions often find these financial offers difficult to refuse, while players see it as a way to improve their economic status without waiting for moves to traditional football hubs like Europe, North America, or Mexico.
Notable examples of this exodus include Matías Palacios and Elián Irala from San Lorenzo. Palacios, who debuted at 16 and was a standout in the 2019 South American U-17 Championship, moved to Al Ain after a brief stint in Switzerland.
