Argentina Judiciary orders government to comply with University Financing Law

Federal Judge Martín Cormick has issued a new order demanding the Argentine government comply with the University Financing Law within five days. The ruling requires the administration to update salaries for university teaching and non-teaching staff and to restore student scholarship programs.

Judge Cormick noted that while the government has made some progress in collective bargaining, it has not demonstrated that salary increases align with the 312.19% inflation rate recorded by INDEC between December 2023 and June 2026. Furthermore, the judge rejected the government's claim that only the Manuel Belgrano scholarship is covered by the law, asserting that programs such as Progresar and Nursing must also be addressed.

Failure to comply with this judicial mandate may result in the imposition of daily fines, known as astreintes. In response, the national government has appealed the decision, arguing that it has already fulfilled its obligations and that the salary increases provided exceed the applicable inflation metrics. Meanwhile, university staff have initiated a 72-hour national strike to demand the immediate application of the law.
