Argentine government to auction Navy land in Ushuaia
The Argentine government is proceeding with the auction of 38 hectares of land previously owned by the Argentine Navy in Ushuaia. The Ministry of Defense declared the property unnecessary, describing it as idle state land with no current or future military use. The sale, managed by the Agency for the Administration of State Assets (AABE), aims to generate funds for the military; under Decree 314/2026, 70% of the proceeds will be allocated to the Armed Forces for re-equipment through Plan ARMA.
In response to the Ushuaia sale, local officials in Río Grande have expressed concern regarding similar naval-owned lands within their urban limits. Councilman Jonatan Bogado has pushed for a municipal initiative to survey state-owned properties in Río Grande to determine if they should be preserved for urban development rather than being sold by the national government.
