Argentine industry groups urge new biofuels law

The Chamber of the Oil Industry of the Argentine Republic and the Center for Cereal Exporters (CIARA-CEC) are calling for the urgent passage of a new biofuels law in Argentina. Industry leaders argue that the current legislation is outdated and that a pending Senate project lacks sufficient legislative interest.

Representatives cited Brazil as a model for progress. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva recently signed a decree regulating the National Sustainable Aviation Fuel Program (ProBioQAV). This framework establishes mandatory, gradual emission reduction targets for domestic aviation, starting in 2027 and aiming for a 10% reduction by 2037. The Brazilian system includes a national certification process for sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and a specific sustainability certificate to allow for the separate commercialization of environmental attributes.

Gustavo Idígoras, president of CIARA-CEC, stated that Argentina's future depends on generating bioenergies based on high-quality, sustainable agricultural raw materials while fostering free competition.
