Argentine labor unions send critical letter to Pope Leo XIV
The CTA de los Trabajadores and CTA Autónoma have issued an open letter to Pope Leo XIV ahead of his visit to Argentina. The document provides a critical assessment of the social and labor conditions under the administration of Javier Milei.
Labor organizations highlighted several economic indicators, including a 40% loss in the real value of the minimum wage over the last three years and a 75% drop in purchasing power for workers in the popular economy. They reported that informal employment now affects nearly half of the workforce, youth unemployment exceeds 16%, and child poverty has reached 45%.
The letter also warns of the social impact of the crisis, noting that families are increasingly turning to debt and what they describe as the scourge of legal and illegal gambling to survive. The unions emphasize the need for the Pope to recognize the precariousness of labor and the erosion of human dignity in the current economic climate.
