Argentine lawmakers debate motivations behind Peter Thiel’s presence

Opposition lawmakers in Argentina have convened a hearing in the Chamber of Deputies to investigate the economic motivations and potential risks associated with the presence of tech mogul Peter Thiel in the country.

During the hearing, approximately thirty specialists, including experts in artificial intelligence, human rights defenders, and environmentalists, raised concerns regarding the installation of AI data centers and the use of national resources. Legislators from the Unión por la Patria bloc questioned whether Thiel is a standard private investor or holds a more significant influence, noting his recent meetings with President Javier Milei and other high-ranking officials, including the Minister of Economy and the President of the Central Bank.

Critics also highlighted potential legislative reforms aimed at adapting the national regulatory framework to suit the interests of Palantir Technologies, the company founded by Thiel. Historical context was noted regarding Palantir’s previous interest in digitizing sensitive files related to the AMIA case during the administration of Mauricio Macri.
