Argentina provincial leaders protest AMBA transport subsidy increase
Several Argentine provincial governors and mayors have criticized the national government's decision to increase transport subsidies for the Metropolitan Area of Buenos Aires (AMBA). Leaders from Córdoba, Salta, and Rosario, including Martín Llaryora, Gustavo Sáenz, and Pablo Javkin, argue that the measure exacerbates regional inequality and ignores the needs of the interior provinces.
Officials claim that while the national administration allocates significant funds to the AMBA region to freeze passenger fares, provinces are forced to use their own resources to subsidize local transport. Rosario Mayor Pablo Javkin noted that for every seven pesos distributed, six go to the AMBA, leaving only one for the rest of the country. Córdoba Mayor Daniel Passerini reported that the government allocated 460 million dollars to AMBA subsidies this year while providing zero pesos to the interior.
In response to the federal policy, local leaders are planning to approach Congress to demand more equitable distribution and a federal approach to transport funding.
