Argentine mayors push for reelection law changes
Mayors in Argentina's fourth electoral district are advocating for legislative changes to allow for reelection in 2027. Under current provincial law, which has limited mayors to a single reelection since 2016, approximately 82 out of 135 mayors would be ineligible to run for their positions in 2027 if the law remains unchanged.
Gilberto Alegre, the mayor of General Villegas, has publicly stated that the absence of these leaders on electoral ballots could weaken the Fuerza Patria party's territorial influence. Proponents are attempting to frame the proposed legislative shift not as a pursuit of political advantage, but as an end to prohibitions that would allow citizens the freedom to vote for their preferred candidates.
However, the political landscape remains divided. Within the Peronist movement, the Frente Renovador has expressed opposition to altering the norm, which was originally promoted during the administration of Maria Eugenia Vidal. In the Radical Civic Union (UCR), internal tensions persist regarding electoral alliances and party identity following recent leadership disputes and judicial interventions.
