Argentine medical team launches pediatric heart surgery mission to Nigeria

A medical team from Argentina, including specialists from Neuquén and Río Negro, is embarking on an international mission to Nigeria to treat children with congenital heart disease. The team, which includes pediatric cardiologist Vanesa Saavedra, cardiovascular surgeon Félix Trossero, perfusionist Javier Parodi, anesthesiologist Guillermina Padin, and nurse Ana Rodríguez, will work at a hospital in Oraifite.

Organized by the VOOM Foundation, the mission involves specialists from several countries, including Canada, the United States, Australia, Brazil, and Colombia. The team aims to perform four to five surgical procedures daily while collaborating with local medical staff.

Experts noted a significant disparity in diagnosis timing between the regions. In Neuquén, 60% to 65% of congenital heart disease cases are diagnosed during pregnancy, allowing for early intervention. In contrast, many children in Nigeria arrive for treatment at ages six to ten, years after the optimal window for intervention.
