Buenos Aires cracks down on stolen phone trade in Once

Buenos Aires authorities have launched a major crackdown on the illegal trade and repair of stolen mobile phones. Following a decree by City Government Chief Jorge Macri, a 90-day emergency period has been declared for the sector to strengthen oversight and implement a new traceability registry for used devices.

In targeted enforcement operations in the Once neighborhood, inspectors from the Government Control Agency (AGC) and the City Police closed 10 commercial premises and one gallery. During these raids, officials seized 75 mobile phones, along with various tools and illegal spare parts. Several of the recovered devices, including brands such as iPhone, Motorola, and Samsung, were confirmed to have active theft reports.

The crackdown specifically targets “High Criticality Zones,” including areas such as Retiro–Microcentro, Balvanera–Once, Liniers, and Chacarita–Villa Crespo. Under the new regulations, businesses must be able to prove the legitimate origin of all phones, parts, and components they hold for sale or repair. Failure to provide such documentation will result in immediate closure and legal action.
