Argentine Navy to reorganize Punta Indio Naval Base

The Argentine Navy is undergoing a structural reorganization known as ‘Plan Dédalo,’ which involves transitioning the Punta Indio Naval Base into a naval station. This plan includes the progressive transfer of personnel, the Naval Aviation School, and the Maritime Surveillance Naval Squadron to the Comandante Espora Naval Base near Bahía Blanca.

While the Navy confirmed that Punta Indio will remain operational and will not see a total military withdrawal, the facility will lose its status as a Naval Base. By January 2028, it is estimated that approximately 180 military personnel and 150 civilian workers will remain at the site. The reorganization aims to optimize resources and shift operational focus toward the Argentine Sea and the Exclusive Economic Zone.

Internal reports have raised concerns regarding this transition. An assessment titled ‘Impact evaluation due to the operational transfer...’ warns that closing the Punta Indio Naval Workshop could lead to a loss of technical certifications, specialized expertise, and autonomy in maintaining the naval fleet. There are also warnings regarding potential cost increases and reduced aircraft availability during the decommissioning process, which is expected to be completed by late 2027.
