Argentine official disputes British historical claims over Falkland Islands

Argentine official Alejandro Ciro Álvarez has publicly challenged a British parliamentary official regarding the historical claims used to celebrate Falklands Day. The dispute arose after Uma Kumaran, the British Parliamentary Under-Secretary for Overseas Territories and the Caribbean, posted a message congratulating islanders on the anniversary of the first sighting of the islands by English privateer John Davis in 1592.

Álvarez, the Argentine Undersecretary for University Policies, responded by stating, “Even in this they lie,” arguing that the 1592 date is historically inaccurate and dismissed by serious British historians. He asserted that the islands were documented by other navigators much earlier, citing potential sightings by Amerigo Vespucci in 1502, as well as subsequent Portuguese and Spanish expeditions in the early 16th century.
