POSCO inaugurates second lithium plant in Argentina's Salar del Hombre Muerto

South Korean mining company POSCO has inaugurated the second plant of its Sal de Oro project in the Salar del Hombre Muerto, located on the border of the Salta and Catamarca provinces in Argentina. The new facility is designed to produce 23,000 tons of lithium carbonate annually, with all production intended for export.

Combined with the existing lithium hydroxide plant, which produces 25,000 tons per year, the company's local lithium carbonate production capacity will reach 48,000 tons annually. The project is operating under Argentina's Large Investment Incentive Regime (RIGI) and has received financing of up to US$700 million led by IDB Invest. POSCO has invested more than US$2 billion in the country since 2018.

During the inauguration, provincial authorities from Salta and Catamarca signed a memorandum of understanding to advance stages III and IV of the project. The long-term goal is to reach an annual production of 100,000 tons of lithium products. The project has already contributed to the creation of over 5,000 jobs, including 600 direct positions at POSCO Argentina, and works with more than 270 local suppliers.
