Argentine pediatric group warns of rising online betting among minors during football matches
The Argentine Society of Pediatrics (SAP) issued an alert that online sports betting is increasingly targeting children and adolescents during major football events featuring the national team. SAP officials say the combination of social media, influencers, football‑related advertising and easy mobile access is normalising a practice prohibited for those under 18. A survey by UNICEF and UNESCO found that one in three Argentine youths aged 9‑17 has placed an online bet, and 64% seek quick ways to earn money online. The society urges families, schools and healthcare providers to monitor signs such as mood swings, anxiety, isolation, declining school performance or unexplained money transfers, emphasizing that parental controls alone are insufficient.
SAP President Silvina Pedrouzo highlighted the need for adult attention, dialogue and offline activities to prevent problematic gambling habits among adolescents.
