Argentine police detain Father Paco Olveira during Plaza de Mayo protest

Argentine Federal Police detained Father Francisco ‘Paco’ Olveira and two other protesters during a demonstration by retirees in Plaza de Mayo, Buenos Aires. The protest took place in front of the Casa Rosada as participants expressed various grievances.

Olveira, a member of the group Curas en Opción por los Pobres, was accused of resisting authority. He was released shortly after the incident, but expressed concern for the other two detainees, Cristian Valderrama and Lucas García. The two men had previously gained public attention during the Marcha Federal Universitaria for resisting a water cannon truck while holding an Argentine flag.

The police operation has drawn criticism regarding the conduct of security forces during the social mobilization.
