Argentine researchers develop mate‑based method to remove toxic chromium from water

Scientists at the Institute of Research and Environmental Engineering (3iA‑EHyS) of the Universidad Nacional de San Martín have created a predictive statistical model to optimise mixtures of yerba mate extract, clay and natural biopolymers for removing hexavalent chromium from contaminated water. The team, led by doctoral researcher Nicolás Arencibia, tested various factors and identified conditions that maximise chromium reduction, aiming to bring effluent concentrations within limits set by the Matanza‑Riachuelo Basin Authority (ACUMAR). The approach could be applied in industrial settings that use chromium, such as leather, paint, steel and cement production, offering a low‑cost, environmentally friendly remediation technology.

The research builds on earlier work with clay and now focuses on more efficient natural polymers, positioning yerba mate—a widely consumed Argentine beverage—as a potential tool for large‑scale water purification projects.
