Argentine researchers develop yogurt to complement breast cancer chemotherapy

Researchers at the Center for Reference for Lactobacilli (CERELA), an institute of CONICET in Argentina, have developed a yogurt that may serve as a complement to chemotherapy for metastatic breast cancer.

Using two specific lactic bacteria, Streptococcus thermophilus CRL807 and Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus CRL864, the experimental study showed that the yogurt helped regulate the body's defenses. In experimental models treated with capecitabine, the yogurt was associated with reduced lung metastasis, less pronounced weight loss, and better preservation of the intestine during treatment.

The research, led by Nicolás Cerasuolo under the direction of María Alejandra de Moreno de LeBlanc and Jean Guy LeBlanc, explores the food's potential as an adjuvant to help the organism better tolerate cancer therapy.
