Argentine researchers protest scientific funding cuts

Scientific researchers, technicians, and students across Argentina are protesting against budget cuts and the dismantling of national science and technology policies under the administration of President Javier Milei. Using the slogan “me pongo la camiseta” (I wear the shirt), demonstrators have worn national team jerseys to signal their commitment to defending public education and scientific development.

In Corrientes, workers from the Instituto de Botánica del Nordeste (Ibone) joined the national movement to demand the continuity of research projects and human resource development. Similarly, in Bariloche, demonstrators gathered at the Centro Cívico to denounce the impact of austerity measures. Protesters from Conicet and the Comisión Nacional de Energía Atómica (CNEA) reported significant job losses, including 400 dismissals at Conicet on July 31 and 62 dismissals at CNEA during July.

The movement involves various national organizations, including Conicet, Inti, Inta, Cnea, and Arsat, as well as members of national universities, all seeking to highlight the consequences of reduced funding on the country's scientific and technological infrastructure.
