Argentine retirees face rising debt and labor re-entry

A report from the Observatorio de Políticas Públicas at the Universidad Nacional de Avellaneda (UNDAV) indicates growing economic vulnerability among retirees in Argentina. More than 27,000 retirees have been forced to re-enter the labor market, often in informal or low-skilled positions, because minimum pensions fail to cover basic living costs.

Additionally, approximately 1.3 million older adults are currently indebted through non-banking credit sources, such as private lenders and mutuals. This reliance on high-interest financing is driven by the loss of purchasing power and rising costs of living, creating a debt spiral that threatens the financial stability of affected families.
