Argentine sailor dies in Cabo Vírgenes fishing vessel accident

A 53-year-old Argentine sailor died following an accident aboard the fishing vessel Cabo Vírgenes. The incident occurred approximately 190 nautical miles northeast of Puerto Deseado during hake fishing operations. The worker was reportedly pinned by a fishing gate, leading to severe pain and vomiting. Despite receiving first aid and attempts at resuscitation, the sailor passed away before an aero-evacuation could be completed.

César Zapata, general secretary of the United Maritime Workers Union (SOMU), reported that this marks the ninth death in the fishing sector so far this year. Zapata highlighted the inherent risks faced by maritime workers and called for reinforced safety measures. The union plans to meet with Coast Guard officials to discuss improving onboard security conditions and addressing the needs of the maritime prefecture.
