Argentine seed industry calls for legislative modernization

The Asociación de Semilleros Argentinos (ASA) is urging the Argentine government and Congress to pass a new seed law to modernize the sector. The industry seeks a regulatory framework that promotes innovation, research and development, and investment to boost agricultural productivity and competitiveness.

In a recent statement, the ASA emphasized its willingness to negotiate, specifically regarding the use of proprietary seeds. The association noted that it has shown flexibility by agreeing to expand the surface area eligible for exemptions from seed use payments, a move intended to provide producers with better access to quality genetics.

The industry highlighted Brazil as a successful model for technological development in the sector. The ASA stressed that the goal of the new legislation should not merely be the redistribution of current sector value, but the creation of conditions to generate significantly more value for the entire agricultural chain.
