Argentine Senate advances Mental Health Law reform

The Argentine Senate has advanced a report on a proposed reform to the Mental Health Law. The project, which has undergone substantial modifications to gain consensus among various political blocs, includes several key changes.

Under the new proposal, involuntary hospitalizations could be authorized by a doctor without the specific requirement of a psychiatrist. The reform also seeks to eliminate asylums and officially incorporate addictions, including gambling addiction, as mental illnesses. Additionally, the plan establishes a financial assistance mechanism to support the provinces in implementation.

While the ruling La Libertad Avanza party aims to debate the measure in the coming week, opposition voices have raised concerns. Senator Jorge Capitanich has called for a postponement of the debate, citing the need for broader consensus among provincial governors and health ministers regarding funding and human resource allocation.
